Despite a mishap-free first nine years of operation, the late 60’s saw lots of accidents at Disney’s first park. A little over a year after Maples’ accident on the Matterhorn ride, Thomas Guy Cleveland, just 19 years old, was in the park for Grad Nite. He ventured on to the closed monorail tracks by climbing over a fence and was, rather predictably, hit by the monorail and killed immediately. A security guard called to him moments before he was struck, and later remarked on how grisly the scene was in the aftermath. The guard claimed that crews had to “hose the kid off the underside” of the train.
