Only a few years after Disneyland’s opening in 1955 came its first major disaster. It was May of 1964, and tragedy struck on the Matterhorn Bobsleds ride. 15 year-old Mark Maples, a resident of Long Beach, California, stood up on the ride and fell out of the car. The ride was equipped with safety belts, but his was undone by a friend riding with him in the car. His injuries were so severe that Mark was taken to the hospital and died a few days later. It was the first fatality in the park’s history.
