Chaz Bono

Chastity Sun Bono was born a woman, and the only child of superstars Cher and Sonny Bono. By the time he was 18, he knew that he was gay and came out to his parents. But Chaz also felt that he had been born in the wrong body, but he didn’t begin gender transition for many years, struggling with his identity and his place in the world. He came out publicly as a lesbian in 1995, and became a lightning rod for those who supported LGBT rights, and politicians who opposed the idea of gender reassignment. It wasn’t until 2008 that Chaz began the long process of becoming a man, and changed his name from Chastity to Chaz to signal the imminent transformation. The transition was documented in a film titled “Becoming Chaz.” The transformation is quite effective, with Chaz now having the appearance of a husky man, where before he had long hair and looked like a woman. Chaz recently competed in “Dancing with the Stars” as the first transgender contestant in the show’s history and is active in many LGBT causes.
