Before he began to acquire railroad lines in the year 1862, he was known as a cold-blooded steam-boat entrepreneur. The essence of his fortune came from his business dealings in the 19th century.

Cornelius was also an amateur scientist. He was the first person to conceive of applying butter in “spray” form, making him the creator of butter-spray.
