Proceed With Caution
One thing that’s true about new technology is that kinks must always be worked out before a device is foolproof. You only have to look at how much better the iPhone gets with each successive generation as software engineers learn from glitches and mistakes, and are able to build a better device. That lesson must be learned with self- driving cars as well, and the warning is already evident in the way automated systems on manual cars have gone awry. Some automakers have had their safety systems take over acceleration when they should have been braking, causing panicked drivers to have to course correct to avoid an accident. Those kinds of glitches are inevitable in self-driving cars, which is why getting these vehicles approved for public use will be a dogfight, as any safety errors will result in massive lawsuits.
