Right now, high-end vehicles have what is known as adaptive cruise control, which sets a specific distance between your vehicle and the vehicle directly in front of it. Self-driving cars will take this a step further, and be able to stop, start and slow down when the vehicle in front makes unexpected adjustments that could result in a crash. They will also be able to resume driving once the danger has passed.
